The City of San Antonio is working to create a significant role for solar energy in the city’s energy portfolio. The Solar America Cities grant will augment the city’s existing initiative to develop a more aggressive near- and mid-term strategic approach to solar power. The city will collaborate with market transformation partners such as local renewable energy non-profits in the development and adoption of a sustainable solar infrastructure for the City of San Antonio by 2015.

Activities

The “Solar San Antonio 2015” project (the name of San Antonio’s Solar America Cities project) will reduce barriers to the commercialization of solar energy technologies by supporting the development of solar friendly city policies and procedures. The City of San Antonio will promote solar technology among residents and local businesses through outreach campaigns and rebate programs.
  • Educate the public on the value of solar energy as a secure, reliable, and clean energy choice through:
    • A media relations and event campaign
    • Educational solar workshops or seminars
    • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) concepts in “high performance” school design
  • Inaugurate new and revised policies and procedures at the City in order to accelerate the use of solar power in existing and new city-owned buildings.
  • Install a replicable high-visibility solar energy system on city property.
